Watching Big Buff on the PP says to me that is what we need, and what we thought we would get in Streit...I still think the Flyers make a push for him as the long term replacement for Kimmo as the FA market looks pretty bleak for D men this coming year...

I still think that the Downie trade was worth it. Plus, Hall seems settled in on the PK.

Could the Flyers use another decent guy for the pk? Sure, but that type of player can and should be picked up at the trade deadline assuming they are a playoff team. I think fatigue was a factor against Winnipeg as they just didn't seem to have the energy needed to be successful on the pk.

At this point, I'm not too concerned about the special teams. I just want to see continued improvement in their overall 5 on 5 play and, as Bill pointed out, a better commitment to closing out games without just abandoning the forecheck and sitting on a lead.

The two goals I recall vividly (Crosby PP and the first Buff PP) were the result of blown D coverage down low and a horrible line change, respectively. I'm a big Talbot fan, but he would have had zero to do with those 2 goals. However, as Tim Panaccio clearly pointed out, if it wasn't for Downie's reckless goonish undisciplined play (i.e. errant stick), the Flyers wouldn't have had to kill the late penalty on the Jets.

Yeah, pretty tough to complain about the results from that road trip.

If they can do that with this home stand, we might have something this year, rather than have everyone rattle off names of 17 year old Canadian guys they know almost nothing about.

I also think Buff would be a great addition. I know Bill hates him... or rather... absolutely would not want him on the team... but I think he is a piece of the puzzle to get this team from being a playoff contendor to deep playoff contendor. Of course IMO if you move for Buff you have to make more then 1 move IMO.

So has Steve Mason's play over the past week earned him the definite number 1 position? Do you guys think he will get the net for this 3 game home stand?

Yep. Next 4 games are very winnable. OTT, BUF, NYI at home, and Monday @ FLA.

I'd be surprised if he got all 3 games, but maybe he might. His play is starting to dictate more games, but he's gotten the lion share of them as it is.

It's not like when the Flyers had Mike Leighton around and Laviolette seemed afraid to play him. The team seems to play well in front of Emery. No reason not to spot him this week at home.

It's not like Max Talbot would have singlehandedly prevented anything with the PK last week.

That's the problem. You'd have to give up value, AND open up a hole on the team. For a guy who had 1 goal in 20 games coming into the game and is second-to-last on his team in +/- (I know, a team stat, but he's next to last), I'm not willing to move value for him.

Mason has now started 20 games as a Flyer dating back to last year. He's yet to allow more than 3 goals in any game. His play in this small sample has been not only # 1 goalie, but franchise goaltender material. He's been tremendous.

25 years old, very quick reflexes, big in the net, playing the angles very well. And a very capable goaltender handling the puck. It almost seems too good to be true.

Since the Flyers traded Talbot, they are 4-2-2.

Since Colordao traded Downie, they are 4-4, after a 10-1 start

Little poll here; How do you think Ottawa will play tomorrow? Do you think they'll be looking for revenge, or just roll over and sleep like they did last time?

Then moving Schenn for Edm 1st, and send our first in 2015 to Rangers for MDZ.

And the Flyers also have a winning record with Hal Gill and a losing record without him.

He'll likely play at least 2 out of 3 this week. I know the history in Columbus, but Mason has really played great for the Flyers, pretty much since he was acquired at the trade deadline last season.

He's got a new approach to the game and he's been working hard with goalie coach Jeff Reese and the benefits have been very evident.

You really think Edmonton, a likely lottery team, would trade it's 1st round pick for Luke Schenn?
